Heads Up On Diabetes

This week, starting from the 12th of July, is Heads Up for Diabetes Week. We wanted to make a little post about what diabetes actually is, and how we can help you manage this condition.

Diabetes is a chronic illness that causes a high level of glucose in the blood. It is the result of the body’s inability to produce insulin, or being unable to use its insulin effectively.

Statistics have shown that, in Australia, 1 in 6 older adults are diagnosed with diabetes. It was found that 90% of cases were type II, with males reporting slightly higher rates than females.
Research has also shown that type II diabetes increases with older age, and hospitalisation rates are slightly higher in those aged 75-80, at 22,500 per 100,000 people.

Don’t fret though, all of our friendly doctors can help to ensure wellness when it comes to diabetes management. They can help you find the diet and exercise programme, as well as demonstrating how to monitor your glucose levels (an important skill which can help you understand the link between blood glucose, exercise, food, and insulin)
All of these together can help to manage this condition.

You can easily book in to speak to one of our lovely doctors about creating a management plan and ensure that you feel the best you possibly can.
