Meet Nikki Johnston
Nurse Practitioner - OAM, MACNP, MACN, MPCNA
“I’m here, as part of the team at Next Practice Deakin, to strive to ensure that all Australians have access to quality care regardless of their age, diagnosis or where they live.”
Nikki is a Nurse Practitioner with over 30 years of clinical practice as well as extensive teaching, leadership and research experience. Nikki has won multiple awards for her contributions to nursing in Australia, including an Order of Australia Medal and the inaugural Australian College of Nursing, Federal Health Minister’s trailblazer award for innovation in nursing research.
Nikki is particularly interested in palliative care. She is a committee member of Palliative Care Nurses Australia and has led research in this space. Nikki believes in reducing hospital transfers and normalising dying while increasing the capacity of staff to care for residents in their last months of life. As such, Nikki works with Next Practice Deakin to assist in the care of aged care facility patients.
Nikki is also a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Canberra, a PhD student researching end of life trauma and has published papers in a number of peer reviewed journals.
When Nikki’s not working, she loves spending time with her large family, gardening and hanging out with her chooks, ducks and dog. She also enjoys cooking, baking, bush walking and camping with the family.
