I eat plenty of salads and vegetables to stay healthy, but
why do I feel worse afterwards?
This question reveals one of the key insights of Eight-Constitution
Medicine (ECM): what's healthy for one constitution may be harmful for
another—especially if you have a liver and gallbladder dominant
constitution.
Liver and Gallbladder Dominant Types
In ECM, two constitutional types exhibit naturally strong liver-
gallbladder systems:
Hepatonia: liver and gallbladder are proportionally strong
Cholecystonia: gallbladder and liver are proportionally strong
While having a strong liver and gallbladder might seem advantageous,
when overstimulated, these organs can excessively suppress their
counterparts: the lungs and large intestine. This creates precisely the
kind of ‘over-imbalance’ we discussed in Part 2.
Common Traits
- Strong drive and decisive personality
- Calm determination and persistence
- Broad social connections
- Natural tendency to sweat easily when healthy (a good sign)
- Discomfort or bloating after consuming seafood, cold foods, or leafy greens
- Often feel digestion and energy are better after eating meat
When Hepatonias and Cholecystonias regularly enjoy a
seafood dinner and leafy greens, what others experience as
a light, healthy meal can trigger inflammation, digestive
distress, or even mood changes. The body is telling them
something important.
Foods That Can Harm
Examples of foods that further stimulate the already strong
liver/gallbladder system:
-Seafood and shellfish
-Leafy greens (e.g. lettuce, cabbage, salad leaves)
-Grapes and wine
Beneficial Foods
Examples of foods that help moderate liver and gallbladder activity and
support the weaker systems:
-Beef, duck
-Warm milk and dairy products
-Root vegetables (e.g. radish, carrot)
-Garlic, pumpkin, mushrooms
Lifestyle Tips
-Sweat-inducing activities are good: regular sauna, cardio exercises, or warm baths
-A warm sleeping environment improves recovery and balance
-Avoiding harmful foods such as seafood or a vegan diet, when experiencing skin issues, joint pain, brain fog, depression, or sleep disturbances
Conditions to watch for
-High blood pressure (particularly essential hypertension)
-Joint pain and inflammatory bowel diseaseSkin disorders (such as eczema or psoriasis)
-Mood disorders, especially depression and sleep disturbances
-Cholesterol imbalances and bowel irregularity (constipation, diarrhoea)
-Fatty liver disease and obesity
The fashionable view that plant-based diets are universally beneficial
simply doesn't apply to everyone. The Pescatarian Diet, Vegan or
Vegetarian diets are particularly detrimental to these types.
For liver-gallbladder dominant constitutions, properly prepared meat can
function as medicine, while seemingly healthy seafood may trigger
illness.
