Give Blood and Save a Life - National Blood Donor Day

Did you know that as little as one blood donation in your lifetime can save up to three lives?

During this time of uncertainty it is crucial we are doing everything we can to support our communities, and this includes giving blood if we are healthy. Australia needs more than 29,000 donations every year, and World Blood Donor Day brings an opportunity to raise awareness to this.

Most people are able to give blood, as long as you;

  • Feel fit and healthy
  • Are aged between 18 and 75
  • Weight over 50kg.

Temporarily, you may be unable to give blood if you;

  • Have recently travelled
  • Had a piercing
  • Have a cold or are feeling unwell in any way
  • Are on certain medications or antibiotics

You will not be able to give blood if you;

  • Have visited or lived in the UK for a cumulative total of six months or more between 1980 and 1996
  • Have engaged in male to male sexual activity or other specified at risk sexual activity in the past 12 months
  • Have recently been pregnant or given birth
  • Have had a tattoo in the past 4 months
  • Have ever had a serious heart condition
  • Have ever had a serious blood disorder or disease
  • Have 'used drugs' by injection or been injected with drugs not prescribed by a doctor or dentist in the past 5 years.

Blood donations are needed all over the world to ensure there is enough access to safe and quality-assured blood.
