Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need travel vaccines for my destination?

While most countries do not have specific vaccination requirements, getting travel vacinations is still highly recommended. Bring your detailed travel itinerary to your General Practitioner (GP), who can provide professional advice on the vaccinations that you may need based on your destination.

For more information, you may visit the Australian Government’s travel advisory website here.

When should I get my vaccine?

According to the Department of Health and Aged Care, you should get vaccinated 6 to 12 weeks before leaving Australia. This will allow your body to develop full immunity against diseases you may acquire overseas. Some vaccines may also need several doses to achieve full immunity.

What diseases should I be aware of?

  • Cholera - This is transmitted through contaminated food and water, and may cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration.
  • Hepatitis A - Like cholera, Hepatitis A is also spread through contaminated food and water. This is one of the most common vaccine-preventable diseases that travelers acquire overseas.
  • Japanese encephalitis - We recommend getting vaccinated against this disease if you are traveling to rural areas where mosquitoes are prevalent in the area.
  • Meningococcal disease - This serious infectious disease is most commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa and can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person.
  • Rabies - This is transmitted through bites from infected animals (cats, dogs, monkeys, rats, etc.), scratches, or licks to open wounds. This can be fatal when left untreated.
  • Tuberculosis - Another serious disease that is spread by close contact with an infected person.
  • Typhoid - This can spread through contaminated food and water, and is more common in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.
  • Yellow fever - This is a serious disease that spread by mosquitoes. It causes fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), and damages the liver and kidneys. Tis is found in Africa, the Carribean, and Central and South America.
