Are you 50–70 with a history of smoking?

National Lung Cancer Screening Program

The Australian Government has introduced a new National Lung Cancer Screening Program to help detect lung cancer earlier, when treatment is most effective.

Who is eligible?

The program is available to people who are:

- Aged 50 to 70 years, and

- Have a significant history of smoking.

What does it involve?

Eligible patients can be referred by their GP for a bulk-billed, low-dose CT scan. This scan is designed to detect signs of lung cancer at an earlier stage, before symptoms may appear.

Why is this important?

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious cancers in Australia. Catching it early can greatly improve treatment options and outcomes.

Next steps

If you’re aged 50–70 and have a history of smoking, speak with your GP to see if you’re eligible. Your doctor can guide you through the referral process and answer any questions you may have.
