Preventative health measures 19-39

Between the ages of 19 to 39 is a great time to focus on prevention of major health issues that could arise later in life. We know life is busy and prioritising your health can sometimes be pushed to the side. You might not be able to see the direct result of a preventive health check but your future self will thank you for one.

What happens during a preventative health consultation?

Not only will your blood pressure, height, weight measurements (past and present) be examined, the doctor will also discuss your family history and lifestyle factors that can attribute to your health and wellbeing. Screenings for cancer, chronic diseases as well as a discussion around mental wellbeing are also conducted.

Cancer screenings can identify signs of cancer before symptoms emerge or they develop. This includes skin cancer checks, breast checks, cervical cancer screening and testicle checks.

Chronic diseases (such as diabetes, heart disease & asthma) are long-lasting and complex conditions that cannot simply be treated by medications and require significant efforts to minimise their effect on your everyday life. Some of these diseases are preventable, which means that lifestyle changes can lower your risk of developing such diseases.

To help improve mental wellbeing, it is important to have techniques available that help with stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. Burn-out is also very common in ages between 19-39. It’s important to remember that these checks are all about prevention meaning you don’t need to have a mental illness to talk about your mental wellbeing.

So, prevention is often much easier and more effective than treatment. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle with physical activity and a healthy diet is a great start. Conducting regular health assessments is also an important measure to ensure that both physical and mental wellbeing are maintained at a high standard.
