🌏 World Hepatitis Day was yesterday (July 28… we’re fashionably late)

.. but the message is just as important today.

Over 200,000 Australians are living with hepatitis B or C, and many don’t even know it. These infections can lead to serious liver damage if left untreated — so let’s bust some common myths and get the facts straight:

Myth 1: Only people who inject drugs get hepatitis.
Fact: Hepatitis B and C can also spread through unprotected sex, unsterile tattoos or piercings, childbirth, or even sharing razors or toothbrushes. Anyone can be at risk.

Myth 2: I’d know if I had it.
Fact: Chronic hepatitis often has no symptoms for years. That’s why regular testing is so important.

Myth 3: There’s no cure.
Fact: Hepatitis C is curable in over 95% of cases with oral medication. Hepatitis B can’t be cured yet, but it can be well managed with the right care.

Myth 4: Hepatitis isn’t a problem anymore.
Fact: Hepatitis is still a major public health issue in Australia. Testing, vaccination, and treatment all play a role in reducing its impact.

Myth 5: I feel fine, so I don’t need to get tested.
Fact: You can feel completely healthy while hepatitis quietly causes liver damage, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. Early detection changes outcomes.

What you can do:
– Talk to your GP or nurse about hepatitis testing
– Ask about the hepatitis B vaccine
– If you’ve been diagnosed, know that effective treatment and support are available 💚
