Are you in need of Shared Maternity Care?
Dr Nisha Iyer is now accredited to provide shared maternity care for public patients with the Royal Women's Hospital and Sandringham Hospital.
Pregnancy and delivery can be one of the most special times in a family's lives, and it is a common reason for choosing to have private hospital health insurance - to entrust the care of oneself and one's unborn little one into the hands of someone one can get to know and trust. To build a rapport with the health professional looking after you through pregnancy is so important for your comfort and peace of mind, and also to ensure that no complications are missed due to the lack of continuity that can come with seeing different clinicians at every appointment.
However, for many reasons plenty of women do not have private obstetric cover - whether it is because the pregnancy was a surprise, or due to financial reasons, or because they fully trust in the public maternity care system (which is still excellent).
I am now very pleased to be able to offer all my patients who may not have private obstetric cover that continuity of care. I am accredited to provide shared maternity care for public patients with the Royal Women's Hospital and Sandringham Hospital.

What this means is that, much like a private obstetrician would, I will review you at scheduled appointments during the course of your pregnancy in conjunction with the hospital maternity care team who will be delivering your baby. Being your GP, I can also maintain a big picture perspective of all other areas of your physical and mental health as well.
Choosing to participate in the shared care model offers you the benefit of seeing the same person at many of your appointments, much lower waiting times, and the convenience of only travelling to Next Practice rather than the hospital. I can measure your growing baby, check their heartbeat and offer you the same assessment you will get at the hospital. I am there to answer your questions, to be your advocate in escalating your care if it should be necessary, and to be with you on every step of your special journey.
